I got to know about Aakash's book- Out Of The Blue: Rajasthan’s Road To The Ranji which i really wanted to read given the fact that i was following his writing (and Cricket of course!) for quite a while and had become a fan of it. Quite recently, i connected with him over Twitter (@cricketaakash) and to my surprise he has been quite response to follower's comments. I say surprise because not many known people with thousands of followers on Twitter actually care to respond to follower's tweets. So for me, it was a welcome change. I had made up my mind to buy his book from flipkart.com as it offered a better discount. Then, by chance i encountered Aakash's tweet to buy the book from cricbuy.com, where he was offering to send the self-signed book. The Graphologist in me never likes to let go of such an opportunity and immediately pounced on it even though the discount offered was comparatively less. Was quite heartening for me to see handwritten wishes from Aakash in the book (along with his autograph) and this was enough for me to get started with writing this post!

Aakash is ruled by his head and not entirely by his heart. He is a cool, collected person. Some may see him as an unemotional person. He does have emotions like all the humans but not always feels the need to express them. He may appear as being withdrawn into himself and doesn’t mind alone. He is a very level headed person and will remain calm in emergency situations. He is never quite impulsive.

Aakash has a tremendous ability to focus on any project/task that he takes on. When he is focusing on some project then he forgets everything else that's happening around him. He has the ability to eliminate all outside noises, thoughts, interference, and ability to concentrate on one subject. When he concentrates, he becomes oblivious to everything around self. This trait is also best reflected in his performance in 2003-04 tour to Australia. Although he failed to cross the 50- mark in the four Tests against Australia, he showed enough patience to spend valuable time in the middle, see off the new ball and build a solid platform from which the strong middle order could elevate India to greater heights. His unflappable concentration has a lot to do with the fact that he just loves spending lot of time in the middle of the wicket.
Aakash incidently wrote a brilliant piece on the topic of concentration, which quotes concentration as simply remaining in the present. Its quite a thoughtful article where he reasons various aspects on concentration.

Aakash has the trait of perfectionism in his personality. He is a kind of person who takes time putting everything in place and reviews work thoroughly in order to make it precise. This also helps him to be the greater writer that he is i.e. he would likely spend considerable effort to out his writings into a state of perfection before everyone gets to see it. In his most recent book- Out Of The Blue: Rajasthans Road To The Ranji narrates the below about himself that justifies to a great extent the perfectionism in his nature-
My mornings have always been well-ordered; I like it that way. On days that a gruelling session or a match lay ahead, my morning to-do list would have been all chalked out in my head the night before. Ever since i started playing Cricket- even as a kid, all of eight- my mornings were dedicated to practice, workouts or even simply a jog. So unvarying was my regimen that i tended to forget what day of the week it was. Every morning looked the same, and so did my plan.

Aakash has the trait of Self Reliance or Leadership in his personality. People with Self- reliance has the ability to take the tough times head-on and gives them necessary confidence and ability to do things to come out of the same. Aakash in his Cricketing career has faced many ups and downs like moving in and out of Indian team despite being in contention, deciding to move to Rajasthan after getting a cold treatment from his native Delhi etc. Its his Self-reliance (combined with determination) that has helped him emerge victorious in the trying circumstances. Infact, a Rock solid Determination is one of his most visible traits from his personality (as evident from the handwriting). Aakash has Cumulative Thinking pattern in his personality. Cumulative Thinkers thinks or creates much like a mason, stacking fact over fact. In this thinking pattern, the conclusion, is usually not complete until the last fact is in place. Such a thinker prefers to learn more through demonstration, by preferring to experience something rather than simply following any written or verbal instruction. What makes Fauja Singh run marathons at the age of 100 ?

There are many phases in life where one looks out for Inspiration. Inspiration, in reality can come from many sources like people, nature, monuments, kids, could be anything.

Of all the inspirational people i have met or came across in my reading endeavors, Fauja Singh is certainly one of a kind, literally unmatched at what he does best. I remember during my early days and even now, to have cited age as a reason for not doing something.

I cant play Cricket at higher level because i am already in my 20's.
I am too old to become an expert any anything.
I wish i could have been born few years earlier so that i could have learned computers while in college.
I am too old to play with small kids.
I am too old to take risks and start my own entrepreneurial venture.
...

If i keep thinking, this list would go on a bit farther.

Well, in the realm of day-to-day lives, saying one cannot do something because of age factor may sound like a right enough justification if keeping only sound logic in mind. Afterall, age does take a toll on our minds and bodies, Right ? All these may even sound scientifically correct until you have heard and assimilated the story of one Fauja Singh . I happened to read his biography sometime back, let me share a few facts about Fauja-

- He started running long distances at the of 89. Yes, you saw it right- 89!
- He ran long distances in excess of a Full marathon, which is a tad more than 42 kms.
- He recently became world's oldest man to run a marathon, at the age of 100!
- When he started running, he didnt just strolled casually. He has a record of completing the marathon in record time of little more than 5 hours. For the folks who have run the marathon, ask them- this is an unbeleievable time for completing a full marathon.
- He has traveled across the world in his 90's on numerous running expedition.
- Some may call him gifted but the fact is that he started walking only at the age of 5. In the normal course, kids start walking when they are close to 1 year.

If whatever is written above doesnt startel you, nothing else would. In my rather short timespan on earth i have seen people who tend to give up on something they like too soon citing age (For example an acquaintance's back problem, he cited "old" his age of 32 as a reason, of all things). I have seen people who tend to stop living once they reach retirement age, chosing to just live life for they have to live. Amidst all this despair and hopelessness, Fauja's story is one remarkable one. Some learnings from his life-

- no age is too less to indulge in a new interest or passion.
- no age is too less to excel at anything.
- no age is too less to make your dreams come true.
- Humans can do remarkable things as long as they are alive.

Author Khushwant Singh in Fauja Singh's biography- Turbaned Tornado writes-
Fauja, besides being defiant and stubborn, is a very determined fellow.Perhaps it is a combination of these three qualities that has given him this longetivity and ability to accomplish derring do feats at this age.

Lets delve deeper into three traits that author has mentioned and whether someone's handwriting can help reveal those. Please note that Fauja's handwriting samples arent available simply for the reason that he is illiterate.

Defiance:
A Defiant person is the one who resists other's authority. This trait is often seen as resentment at being told what to do and as rebellion. This can be easily explainable in Fauja's case that he resisted so many people who tend to discouraged him to not take up running at such an old age.

Defiance can be revealed by one's handwriting as follows-
A large lower case letter, espacially "K" anywhere in the writing.

Determination:
Determination simply is Firmness of purpose; resoluteness.

Determination can be revealed by one's handwriting as follows-
Downstrokes extending below the baseline. They must be extensions downward of strokes starting in the mundane area.
The longer the stroke below the baseline, the more enduring the determination.
The heavier the stroke, the more forceful and strong the determination.


Stubborn:
A Stubborn person is more braced towards his own ideas. He rarely admit that he is wrong and don’t want to be confused with the facts after he has made up his mind.
Stubborn is a fear of change for the sake of change.Stubborn person thinks he is always right and takes a stand. He don’t even look at the other side and weigh other possibilities.
Stubbornness is a strong defense trait. The stubborn person might say "i refuse to accept your argument, whether they're right or wrong." It is often a negavive trait as it never lets you accept anyone's ideas.

Stubbornness can be revealed by one's handwriting as follows-
Revealed by "t" and "d" stems shaped like a tepee or upside down "V"

What makes Aamir Khan bounce back successfully after facing tough times ?

I know reading the title you must be wondering - " Aamir Khan and Tough times", doesn’t go well together at all. After all, we are talking about the man how is considered to have Midas-touch in Indian cinema much like Mahendra Singh Dhoni did for Indian Cricket. For the man who has come up with consistent blockbuster movies in the last decade (not only as an Actor but also as a Producer and Director), the term "Tough times" may not sound all that right. But looking back his life and history suggests some serious dips in career and personal life.

Consider the time after 2001 and his blockbuster movie- Lagaan , Aamir took a break of almost 4 years and came up with a Movie called Mangal Pandel: The Rising , which turned out to be a dud at the Box office. Moreover, this was a phase in which he dealt with divorce and a sort of separation from his kids during this phase. Not only this, during the initial times when he started his career as a full-fledged actor in the year 1988, he faced quite a lot of flop films through-out his journey. Moreover, he has had a rough patch when dealing with his brother. His launch film failed miserably and then in 2007 he lost the custody of his younger brother in an ugly court battle.

Such times often gets over-shadowed when people think of him. And this perception that he has created has been as a result of lot of result oriented films in the past decade that went on to create history at the Indian box office (wont use the term "Bollywood" as this is opposed by many Industry veterans). The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010 for his contributions towards the arts. A very handful of active actors have received Padma Bhushan.

It has been more of a see-saw life rather than a fairy-tale that Aamir Khan has lived, unlike the popular perception people carry about him. The kind of lows he has seen can break any common man and the kind of highs he has seen can make the same common man insane.

I am often intrigued by the lives of such people. What is it that makes him come back so strongly even after been hit by severe setbacks in both personal and professional lives ? There ought to be something made up of steel in his personality that refuses to break him in troubled times and at the same time maintain his sanity to keep his creative juices flowing. It is with this intrigue that i started to look at his handwriting to find some answers and perspective.

Lets take a look at his Handwriting Sample below-




One of the first things that strike me is the first letter of his signature "A". The way it has been formed suggests something unique. The stroke forming the letter "A" goes back and the goes forward further on the right side. This is a unique formation that signifies Persistence . Simply put, Persistence is a trait that says "Don’t Give up". Whatever the situation, whatever the condition, the people who persist in their endeavours believe that tomorrow would a better day even if slightly. They have this innate ability to see the light in a dark tunnel when everyone has given up and lost hope. This seems like a foremost trait that can help people come out or atleast give the belief that they can come out of the troubled time.

The underline or underscore below his signature suggests Self Reliance or Leadership . People with Self-reliance has the ability to take the tough times head-on and gives them necessary confidence and ability to do things to come out of the same.

The large capital in his first name ("A") also suggests that he has as immense sense of self . He has this innate desire to stand-out of the crowd that drives him. While most common people would have broken down in the situations he has faced (where not only mammoth money but a lot of professional and personal credibility is at stake), he gets driven to fight the situation out and stand-out.

These three aspects (suggested by his handwriting) of his personality make him so competent to deal with monster problems and come out as a winner.

How to spot a micro-manager ? Does your handwriting give any clues ?

Those who have experienced the phenomenon of micro-management at work would agree that it is one of the topmost stuff that most of the competent workforce would want to run away from. Those who have not experienced it can consider themselves lucky for sure.
The intent here is not to say or prove that micro-management is always a bad management virtue. It is definitely one of the preferred Management styles in certain specific situations. Infact, i have my self being involved in initiating the same in certain situations detailing with Performance Management, and for the situations at work that warrant taking charge and control. However, i would agree that such situations are not always as frequent but certainly not rare.

Wait, i don’t understand what micro-management is ? Can you help me understand ?
Let me quote a few sources.
Wikipedia defines micro-management as- In business management, micromanagement is a management style where a manager closely observes or controls the work of her or his subordinates or employees. micro-management generally has a negative connotation.

Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines micromanagement as-
manage[ment] especially with excessive control or attention on details.

Dictionary.com defines micro-management as-
manage[ment] or control with excessive attention to minor details.

The online dictionary Encarta defines micro-management as
atten[tion] to small details in management: control [of] a person or a situation by paying extreme attention to small details".

Now may be i understand a bit about it. Can you please help me understand more ?
To me, micro-management is core part of our upbringing as a human. The studies prove that of most of the living species on Earth, the sort of attention and time that humans demand or need (from the time they are born to the time they step out of home usually after Adolescence) to completely get independent is phenomenal. There are scientific reasons for why humans need so much attention, care or parenting but delving into those is certainly not the focus on this post. The basic premise is that being humans, we grow during our early years by virtue of micro-management by our parents or care-takers. You don’t believe this ? Let me cite some instances-
• What will happen if the mother does not timely sense that the baby is hungry and don’t feed on time ?
• What will happen if the parent does not frequently wash the hands of their kids once they start crawling ?
• What will happen if the parent does not train the kid of the basic hygiene ?
• What will happen if the parent does not take the kid for appropriate treatment if he/she is ill ?
• ...and many many more such examples.

If we go back to the previous definitions of the term micro-management, you will realize that as a kid, most of us has been raised with the following virtues applied by our parents-
• Excessive Attention to details in meeting our legitimate needs.
• Showing complete control on our well-being.
• Sometimes being dominant so as to teach or impart the right stuff.
• Sometimes even being defiant not to allow the unnecessary demands.

Isn’t micro-management instilled in a way we were all brought up ? What happens when the same micro-management is applied to work ? Depending upon the situation one is in, it more often leads to disgruntled employees.

Why do the employees not like being micro-managed ?
An interesting article here suggests the following relevant symptoms of you being micro-managed.
• Your boss is never wrong and doesn’t like arguments.
• You have to give more details than required
• You feel you are working under a microscope
• You do not feel your job is autonomous with absolutely no scope of applying your brains.
• Your boss takes all decisions without considering suggestions
• Your boss sets your priorities, and expects complete adherence. In case of non-compliance, you are shot down.

Talking again about the Kid's analogy, one relevant argument could be that as novices in the world, that’s probably the best approach to learn. But once we become qualified and learn well on the job and reach a state of Independence, being micro-managed is often felt as unnecessary and counter-productive.

Can someone's handwriting help me spot a micro-manager ?
Yes, no doubt handwriting can spot the group of traits that can reveal micro-management tendencies. The reason i say "a group of traits" is that there is no single trait that would brand someone as a micro-manager. So what are these traits ? Some of them listed below-

Attention to details is one of the traits that a micro-manager has the most. In some cases i would even say Obsessive Attention to details. Such a person usually goes to the core of work issue and breaks down the work to the minutest possible extent. Once that’s done, he/she usually starts asking some uncomfortable questions to his/her employee.
Attention to details can be easily revealed by one's handwriting by observing "i" and "j" dots. The more the dots are perfect dots (with no edges) and close to the stem, the more Attentive to details is the person usually.

Perfectionism is another likely traits of a micro-manager. A person who is perfect prefers to do things or expects others to do things in a flawless manner. Such a person has a lot of structure and may want to control things that don’t matter. He/She may want things in certain order- which may be unnecessary. He/She spend a lot of time putting everything in place and review work trying to make it more precise and have excessive need for control in certain areas. Perfectionism is usually a good trait if it is implied on self. As long as one starts exhibiting Perfectionism on others, usually the problem starts. Perfection can also be defined as a fear of losing control.
Perfectionism in handwriting is revealed by a straight and even baseline that you could draw a straight line underneath.

Dominance is one trait that most micro-managers possess. Such a person tends to be in control and likes being so. He/She sometimes can take charge without angering those around but usually dominance is viewed as more autocratic by people. Such a person naturally gravitate towards the position of authority. They enjoy being in command.
Dominance in handwriting can be revealed by downslanted heavy "t" bar and to the right. More downward the slant, the more dominant the personality.

The above are the very basic combination of traits that could be found in a micro-manager. Of course, there can be more traits or trait combination that could add on to these. For example-

If a person is also (in addition to above traits) emotionally very expressive, Sarcastic, has Temper and is Domineering , then it is more deadly combination of trait for a person who people may label as a "Bad-boss".

Will you analyze my Handwriting ?

This is one of the most common questions that i get asked in this forum. So, i thought i will write a bit of my perspective around this here.
I took up Handwriting Analysis as a passion and something i got inclined to naturally during my early days. I did self-learn for quite some time and then ventured out to complete a professional qualification in Handwriting Analysis.

This is certainly something i want to do more and more of but as you would guess by the frequency of update in this blog that i haven’t fully been able to do the justice to it. I want to update this blog more frequently but more often it turns out to be a challenge to figure out the time post work. But i will still continue to update this as much and as fast and accurately as i can in the near future.

When i get asked the question "Will you analyze my handwriting ?", a part of me want to jump to the opportunity as there is something new to learn in every signature or handwriting sample, other part (which tends to be more objective) tells me to figure out the time before you make the commitment. More often, the later part wins.

I would like to add another perspective here. When i completed the professional qualification in handwriting analysis, i thought to take this up professionally (may be part time). But i did not choose to pursue the same, thinking that it would likely kill the joy i get. Over the years as i grew and started becoming more aware of things around, i started getting connected with some of the social causes (not because its fad, but i really wanted to for the reasons i can share if you like to hear). In my association, i always felt more of the people who drive these efforts are always short of cash or they cannot take up more just because they do not have steady flow of cash.

The various events that took place started compelling me to raise money for such organizations and thus the idea about using my skill in Handwriting Analysis to raise money was born. Though i realize it won’t raise mammoth funds but something is always better than nothing or than being just a mute spectator around. Also this will help me channelize the learnings about Handwriting Analysis towards making a little difference to someone's life. So, if you ask me "Will you analyze my handwriting ?", i would request you to read this post and get back to me if you are still interested. I probably am not asking for a huge sum here (and if you are my friend/known to me i might ask you to give whatever you feel is ok :-)) and i have observed that the gains of getting the handwriting analyzed are plenty if done properly. This is one science that helps you connect with your inner self and can potentially tell you a lot more about yourself. There is even a part of this science called as "Grapho-Therapy", which helps bring the change in you by practicing and changing the strokes of your handwriting. If you are wondering about what i wrote, yes one can change handwriting and change certain aspect of one's personality but it requires practice as is needed with any change.

Signature Speaks: Steve Jobs and Charity- Not quite poles apart!

The Wikipedia page on Steve Jobs says-
After Bloomberg accidentally published Jobs' obituary in 2008, Arik Hesseldahl of BusinessWeek magazine noted that "Jobs isn’t widely known for his association with philanthropic causes", compared to Bill Gates' efforts.[89] After resuming control of Apple in 1997, Jobs eliminated all corporate philanthropy programs.

After i came across the above information, I starting feeling quite intrigued. Several thoughts started running in my mind like-
- For a man who is so widely admired for his absolute genius, shouldn’t he be "expected" to be good at giving as well.
- Like all we know about Steve Jobs, he wont do anything unless he total sure of a perfection. May be Charity is an aspect he would like to do differently like he has approached each and every thing about his work.
- For a man who is so admired for his single mindedness may be he would think about the Charity with his legendary single mindedness now since he is retired.

Nobody could deny the fact that Steve is so whole-heartedly involved with Apple and the turn- around could not have been possible if he had not put his entire energies to uplift the company when he re-joined in 1997. If we take out the condition for Public giving, it was well known that Jobs took a One dollar-a-year salary from Apple before stepping down as CEO (though he earned his fortune through Stock options).

Lets look at a different view to this situation i.e. Does Steve Jobs's Handwriting or Signature throw any light on this (giving) aspect of his personality ?
The Signature sample of Steve Jobs shows a long final stroke at the end, extending to the right by 45 degrees or more. This is especially shown in the last letter "n" of the first name.


Such a characteristic in handwriting is the representation of Generosity. One more aspect of Steve Job's signature reflects Generosity (though it would have been better to check with larger sample of handwriting) and its the specing between the words. Generosity is also reflected by larger spacing between words and letters.
Generosity is willingness to share. Generally such a person derives happiness by being generous to others.

So, it is evident that Steve Job's Signature reflects Generosity. Its not that there are no records of Jobs not being involved in Public Giving as Andrew Ross Sorkin says in his article
While many high-growth technology companies have philanthropic arms, Apple does not. It does not have a company matching program for charitable giving by its employees like some other Fortune 500 companies. The company did donate $100,000 in 2008 to a group seeking to block Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would have banned same-sex marriage in California.

This may be one of this hidden trait of his that he will bring about in public sooner than later. And who knows, like some people, he may be keeping his involvement in Charitable causes a secret. The same secretness he is so vividly known to have kept till the launch day of iconic products.

- Prakash Iyer is an Author of the book- The Habit of Winning , a unique book driving the wisdom through some simple everyday stories.

A Note about Prakash Iyer's Handwriting/Signature Sample:
I got the access to this Sample while i purchased Prakash's book The Habit of Winning . I think i must have been one of the first few people to have brought this book, that’s why i got this book personally signed by the author himself (Check the Source of handwriting section below). I had been quite inspired by his articles in Careers 360 magazine (I infact used to buy the magazine only to read his article, which used to appear in almost every edition).
One difference that this sample has (which not many samples in this blog had) is that it contains both his signature as well as a piece of handwriting. As Signature usually represents one's Public self, having both Signature as well as the handwriting helped arrive at more balanced overview of his personality.

Prakash Iyer's Handwriting/Signature Analysis:
Prakash uses his judgement to make decisions without any/much of influence of emotions. People with this trait wont get pushed around emotionally by other people. He is ruled by his head not the heart . He is a cool, collected person who may be un-expressive emotionally. Some people may see him unemotional. He has emotions but may not have the need to express them at a drop of hat. All his conclusions/decisions are made without outside emotional influence.
