Sense of humor and Handwriting- A tribute to Jaspal Bhatti

When i heard the news about untimely demise of Jaspal Bhatti first , i thought it is one of the false news played by the man known for his onscreen comedy and pranks. Alas, it was not to be true.

I remember the times during the childhood when we used to defer going to playground (yes, we had  lots of them then) to watch his satirical show- Flop Show highlighting common man's problem with a simple dose of humour. That show is a lot relevant now probably more than it was then. His humour touched everyone alike- be it kids or adults,or aunts, young or old, male or female. There was another show called as Ulta-Pulta.  It was quite common for the kids then to cajole their parents into watching TV for additional half-an-hour to watch these shows. He was an anti-corruption crusader even at the time when it was not fashionable to talk about/against corruption in India.
His straight-faced humour was a need of the hour in today's times when the humour tends to be expressed more digitally by emoticons and smileys than in person.

A dose of humour gives us simple pleasures in life but the topic of understanding humour is quite complex in itself as Mark Twain had once said, “Studying humor is like dissecting a frog — you may know a lot but you end up with a dead frog.”  My intention here is to write a few lines as a tribute to a man who made us smile no matter what was going on in our lives.

Sense of humour:
Oxford dictionary define humour as "the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech". Having humour can be thought of as a trait of being funny. Humour does have distinct characteristics but the most of basic of them would be the ability to make others laugh and secondly, the ability to see the amusing side in the situations of life. There is also an interesting characteristic of ability to laugh at self.

Ingredients of humour and their association with Handwriting:
What kind of clues can one's handwriting give on the humour in one's personality ? Here, i would like to point some direct and indirect references.

Handwriting analysis is a lot about deciphering the strokes that makes the various components of the handwriting. Directly speaking- the presence of a "Wavy" t-bar or the "wavy" beginning of strokes depict the presence of humour in one's personality.

Indirectly speaking, humour can be safely treated as a creative activity . The reason i say it as a creative activity is because there is a sort of unexpectedness associated with humour that make the people to laugh. The unexpectedness can be attributed to creative potential of the person. Creativity is an intense topic in itself and handwriting gives some good clues about creative thinking. It is usually associated with the different forms of thinking such as Cumulative thinking (shown in the handwriting with letters "m" and "n" having flat or curvy tops), in which a person stack facts upon fact and takes its own time to arrive at a conclusion. Such form of thinking can lead to creative responses as the person tends to think through the situations. Most of the comedians dealing with dead-pan comedy may belong to this category. Other type of thinking patters could be Comprehensive thinking pattern (shown in the handwriting with sharp, pointed tops at "m" and "n") in which a person thinks a rapid pace and gets back with funny one liners and quick responses to the situations.

Sarcasm is another useful ingredient of humour. Sarcasm is usually treated as a negative trait but also often consists of double meaning of whatever is said. It is often used in generating humour. Most of the humour generated at the people holding high offices (Politicians etc.) has sarcasm as a key trait.
Sarcasm can be seen in handwriting in the sharp pointed "t" bars.

Imagination is another important ingredient of humour. Most of the humourists have very high degree of imagination and they have an ability to think the un-obvious and make a statement which nobody can even think of. This trait is usually seen in the Stand-up comedians. People with imagination can see the situations with a wider horizons. Tina Seelig in her this class on creativity even noted that "Jokes are interesting because the frame switches in the middle of the it" and that is largely because of one's imagination.
Imagination in handwriting can be revealed by large and wide lower loops in the letters "y", "g" and "j".

Apart of these traits, most humourists have the ability to laugh at themselves. And the people who have the ability to laugh at their own expense are not sensitive to criticism i.e. they just take the jokes on themselves in their stride and not take it personally. Sensitiveness to criticism can be noted in one's handwriting in letter "d" or "t" having looped stem. People having this trait are unlikely to have the ability to laugh at themselves.

 Probably, there's a lot more around Handwriting and humour that could be explored than the above glimpse but i will temporarily stop here.

Not sure home many of these traits would Jaspal Bhatti's handwriting have as  i have not see his anytime but I had recently started following Jaspal Bhatti on twitter and found that he had this knack of seeing humor in the serious news and he did tweeted some hilarious ones. Alas, there wont be next tweet coming anymore.

"The World of Handwriting Analysis"- The Journey so far

What traits made Subhas Chandra Bose such an intense revolutionary ?

Subhas Chandra Bose (23 January 1897 – unknown) also known as Netaji (Hindi/Bengali: “Respected Leader”), was one of the most prominent Indian nationalist leaders who attempted to liberate India from British rule during the waning years of World War II.

Bose was a part of Indian National Congress (INC) and had grew through ranks to be become a leader of repute. He was eventually ousted from the INC as he was getting more and more convinced that India could be freed only by means of Force. This was a clear difference of Ideology with Gandhiji, which resulted in Bose's ouster from the INC. All these events made him more determined to formalize the use of force by means of setting up an army of people, which later was called as "Azad Hind Fauj". 

Bose was a shrewd and clever leader and his idea of using the violent means to gain Independence of India coincided or rather was inspired by the atmosphere of instability across the world during the World-war-II. He was a master negotiator and negotiated the case of building army with the representatives of many countries like Germany, Italy, Japan etc. He did eventually form an army with Indian prisoner of wars after Japan won the war over Singapore. This is considered to be the start point of Bose's dream of forming Azad Hind Fauj.

About Bose's handwriting sample: 

I got this handwriting sample as a forward over email. I don't claim this to be authentic but looking at some common aspects of this sample and others available on the internet, i have no strong reason to believe that this is fake either. Whatever is the case, this sample made me interested in knowing more about this man, who is worshiped even today for his courage and will to fight till the last breath for the nation. My quest to know more about him made me  watch the movie- Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero .

Before i start analyzing the key aspects of his personality, i just wanted to put things in perspective with respect to Bose's persona.  And in order to do that, i will ask a simple question- "What sort of people even think of forming an army with an intention to free a nation ?"  Certainly not the common everyday people.  It is actually beyond the imagination of majority of us. But If i am asked to attempt to answer this question,my answer would someone who is - extremely passionate almost to a fault, Having a fire in the belly, deep desire to make a lasting difference, having extreme discontentment at the status-quo and may be some more similar sounding traits. While these traits are important to make a mark in any chosen endeavor, forming an army of committed people from scratch is certainly a different territory altogether. At that time, the hardships faced by Bose were like going against a massive tide of emotions nationwide (with Gandhiji preaching non-voilent means), which required beating the demons of self doubt and immense courage and determination to go ahead with the intended plans.

While the above mentioned list of traits is good but one thing is for sure, at the very root of even such a thought striking an individual has to be a background of very strong emotional feelings. One can't stake claim to take up something as complex as freeing the nation without extremely strong emotional push and foundation. This is something that can't certainly be done by any cold mannered individual.

This post is more about one such extreme trait that is very prevalent in Bose's handwriting sample. So its now a right moment to look at the handwriting sample-

Personality trait of "Resentment" in Subhas Chandra Bose's handwriting 

And this trait is called Resentment

Resentment is usually an effect caused by a extreme feeling of unfairness and its often in a form of deep rooted anger. There is a great deal of difference between the way we usually get angry in our day-to-day lives and getting angry while displaying resentment. 

Resentment is an extreme form of anger, something very akin to the way mobs get angry and demonstrate it by violence that actually hurts people who this is directed at. Bose's handwriting has clear evidence of such a trait and what that means is that he had an extreme form of resentment at the whole situation around the freedom and felt very strongly that his country was being given an unfair treatment and had a growing desire to change the status-quo.

One of his arguments with Gandhiji during the formative years of Azad Hind Fauj was that- as a country one should to make use of World war-II situation (which he eventually did) to weaken the opponent. Gandhiji was not convinced with the idea due to his philosophy of not to attack the opponent when he is weak. But Bose eventually went that path and that action to me seem more driven by resentment in his personality.
Resentment usually results in the violent display of emotions. Its an anger that gets harbored over a period of time, that is unresolved and which eventually explodes after a while.

While its hard to comment on pressure of handwriting in a digital sample but on careful examination, the pressure in Bose's handwriting can be assumed to be on the higher side. Higher pressure also means intensification of the existing emotional trait. Add this to the resentment trait and we really have a explosive answer to the question i posed earlier-  "What sort of people even think of forming an army with an intention to free a nation ?"

Can handwriting determine your ability to "Rinse your cottage cheese" ?

 Before the title start seeming intriguing to you, I just thought to share a story from Jim Collin's book "Good to Great". The context of below story is that Jim analyses the various factors that made some organizations reach eventual greatness and in the below excerpt, he lists one of the reasons-

We came to call this the "rinsing your cottage cheese" factor. The analogy comes from a disciplined world-class athlete named Dave Scott, who won the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon six times. In training, Scott would ride his bike 75 miles, swim 20,000 meters, and run 17 miles - on average, every single day. Dave Scott did not have a weight problem! Yet he believed that a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet would give him an extra edge. So, Dave Scott - a man who burned at least 5,000 calories a day in training - would literally rinse his cottage cheese to get the extra fat off. Now, there is no evidence that he absolutely needed to rinse his cottage cheese to win the Ironman; that's not the point of the story. The point is that rinsing his cottage cheese was simply one more small step that he believed would make him just that much better, one more small step added to all the other small steps to create a consistent program of superdiscipline.

So, "Rinsing your cottage cheese" came to be known as a metaphor for the most disciplined people, who would go lengths of any proportions to ensure that they stick to the plans they have charted for themselves. In short, this was a metaphor for Super-disciplined people. Discipline is one of the consistent factor that would help determine what you eventually get to achieve before you call it a day. Discipline is more about choosing "Now" when your lazy self lures you towards choosing "Later". The more i think about discipline as a trait, the more it emerges as a multifaceted trait i.e. dependent on multiple factors. To simplify this further, this compound trait consists of the following sub-parts-

Will power :

Will power as a term is sometimes synonyms with Discipline. Dictionary meaning of the same is the strength of will to carry out one's decisions, wishes, or plans.

Perseverance :

Perseverance is an important element of Self discipline. It is an ability of an individual to stick to the plans despite the odds and difficulties. It is the ability to handle rejection or pain and keep going. This is what is called "Don’t Give up" mind-set, which is so much a part of disciplined people.

Self Control :

Discipline is about internal control. It is about ability to say "No" at the right moment at the right circumstances. A person exercising Self-control may be under tremendous strain from within as he is constantly try to control something.

Perfectionism: :

Excessive Perfectionism can be a negative trait but we are not talking about anything excessive here. If Self-control is about saying "No" and good part of being Self-disciplined also deals with saying "Yes" at the right moment. This ability to follow a code of conduct or a set rule comes from Perfectionism.

Can handwriting give clues about the various sub-traits that constitute discipline ? The answer to this is an emphatic "Yes".

Will power can be determined through one's handwriting by looking at how the horizontal "t" bar is formed. A heavy (high pressured) "t" bar is usually an indicative of Will power. You can notice this in M.F. Husain's Handwriting sample  here .

Perseverance  can be determined in one's handwriting by looking at the strokes forming the letter that goes back and the goes forward further on the right side. This can be noted in Aamir Khan's signature here .

Self control can be determined by looking at (again) how the "t" bar is formed. The concave "t" bar usually is indicative of Self Control. This can be viewed in Sachin Tendulkar's signature here .

Perfectionism can be noted in the handwriting sample which has a straight baseline. This can be viewed in Manmohan Singh's signature here .

So Handwriting does give some good clues that can help determine Discipline in one's handwriting. How well do you rinse your cottage cheese ?

Whats behind Manmohan Singh's legendary silence ? Does his handwriting give any clues ?

Just to give a perspective of what this post is all about, If you Google Search "Manmohan Singh Silence", you will get about 6,780,000 results as number of pages. He is aleady in his second term as a PM and a lot has been written about on why he does not express himself publically as much as a Prime Minister (PM) of the world's largest democracy should do. I make a mention to democracy here because with it comes the "Freedom to speech" as one of the fundamental rights and that is what the country does not see PM do too much of.

While there are a jokes galore on the stance that Manmohan Singh takes when it comes to expressing himself, just to set things straight, this post is not about that. Rather this post is more about an honest peek into his personality (via his signature) and search for objective answers around this.

Manmohan Singh's Signature Sample

A Note about Manmohan Singh's Handwriting/Signature Sample:

This Signature sample has been taken from a note that appeared in the Times of India newspaper dated back on 2006. I had preserved the cutting then. Incidently, he was during his first term as a Prime Minister then.

What this Signature sample tells about Manmohan Singh's silence ?

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has very visible signs of Introversion (characterized by leftwide slant in signature) in his personality. People who are Introvert are visibly reserved and shy by their basic nature. Such people do not come out of their shell very easily. They may occasionally come out of the shell and then go back at the next available opportunity. Such a person show the feelings usually at the times of great anger, extreme passion, or tremendous stress. He is never an impulsive person.

In his Signature sample, there are a couple of areas that represent trait intensification portions. These portions are

- Small handwriting

- High pressure

When I say trait intensification portions, i mean that presence of these portions in the handwriting usually intensifies other aspects of the personality.

When we talk about the small letter size, it primarily relates to concentration, the smaller the handwriting more profound is the ability of a person to focus on the tasks. The influence of every trait, whether negative or positive, will be increased in strength if there is concentration in writing. If we relate this fact to the first fact about his reserved demeanor, we can easily see why Manmohan Singh behaves the way he does when it comes to sharing his thoughts and breaking his silence. And if we consider the fact that high pressure in his handwriting also has a similar intensification effect, we are actually talking about putting two strong magnifying glasses on top of his reserved nature, just doubly magnifying this aspect of his personality.  It makes it even more difficult for him to come out of his shell.

[Note: In any digital or printed signature, it is quite hard to judge the pressure applied while writing something but this is where experience matters. With my experience of looking at myraid of handwriting samples, i can safely conclude that this sample would fall in the category of high pressure.]

Couple of more insights here, his signature also reveals that Manmohan Singh tends to be a sort of perfectionist. The people who have the perfection streak in their personalities usually tend to be doubly sure before venturing into any task. This desire to be perfect can likely interfere with his ability to share and say things. Being in a public life and that too of a PM, its just not possible to be always perfect in your oratory. The desire to be perfect here likely discourages him to be open when speaking. Adding to this fact is the fact that he has a desire to be Open and honest (as shown by "a", "o" formations) in his communication can further play a role in him choosing to be silent. Afterall, there are very less honest things to share when in coalition politics.

One more fact to take into consideration is that the current text under analysis is his signature and Signatures reflect the public personality of an individual. The above description thus is the way he has chosen to be in the public life. (For his private life mannerisms, i will really need to look at his handwriting samples, which i don’t have yet)

One last thing- When i say silence in this write-up, it does not include the situations when the subject does not deliberately share something out of intention. It's just an attempt to share an aspect keeping his inner personality into mind.

A final note:

As an overall note, I would like to mention that the purpose of this post is not to debate whether silence is good or bad for PM. Like (then Home Minister) P. Chidambaram once said about this aspect of PM’s personality- “This is the style of the man”, its truly upto an individual to remain the way he wants to remain while doing his or her duty as required. would reveal a mammoth list of achievements that the PM has an individual. He is probably the most educated PM that world has ever seen and has achieved a lot more in life besides just education. That is something which requires due respect to be given. I could end this saying that- Manmohan Singh (by nature) is more of a doer than a sayer. It can be good, it can be bad and this is something that could be debated forever.

Managing Software Personnel by the Stroke of the pen

Over a period of last few years, I have found out an interesting co-relation or rather a very powerful way in which the science of Graphology helps in the day-to-day life as a Software professional. I am hereby posting an un-edited version of my article that recently got published in the print and the web version of “TheSmartTechie” magazine a while back. Would appreciate a feedback!


Introduction:
“Factual Approach to decision making”- This principle is an integral part of Quality Management System offered by ISO 9001: 2000, any TQM recognition award such as Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award or a Quality initiative like Six Sigma.
It can be concluded from the above principle that effective organizations involve decision making based on analysis of data and information. In above context, the “Factual approach to decision making” principle mostly deals with decisions about products, processes, sales, profits etc. as there are proven statistical techniques that aid decision making in these areas.
An area that is often neglected while considering data driven decision making is the one involving human related decisions.
Every Leader, Manager or Supervisor in Software arena has a responsibility of human resources in addition to the successful launch of product and processes. Further, in Software field, every leadership, Managerial position requires an individual to possess certain capabilities of a Human Resource Manager because people in these positions are involved in important human related decisions such as Selection of right candidate for the job, Ideal team formation, Ideal resource and work Allocation etc. It is often noticed that such decisions are made out of gut feel and intuition without effectively considering the personality traits an individual possesses. This can lead to wrong human related decisions being taken and that eventually affects goals of team, productivity, Return of Investment from a particular team. Thus, there’s always a need of more realistic approach to decision making in human related areas.
Graphology is one such tool that accurately reveals one’s personality traits. Graphology is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating, and understanding a person's personality via the strokes and patterns revealed by a person’s handwriting. Handwriting is a visual representation of one’s thought process. Consider the following situations-

Case study 1- Hiring the right candidate:
As a Manager of the Software group, you intend to hire Engineers with diverse Technical skill sets. As a general Interview process that is followed in most of the organizations, the Technical skills gets evaluated by series of Interviews by experts and practical tests would give fairly accurate insights into candidate’s technical competencies. Every job requires an applicant to posses certain soft skills that ultimately plays an important part in success or failure of an individual in the profession. E.g. a Software Developer, in addition to strong technical skills, would require soft skills such as Analytical, problem solving skills, creative in approach etc. On the other hand, a Software tester might require skills such as Good attention to details, persistence, Organizational ability etc. Importantly for the organization hiring an individual, adequate time should be spent evaluating these skills in the candidate along with the technical skills. The usual way this is done in most of the organization is at the tail-end of the Interview process when an experienced manager or an HR manager asks the questions. The whole method of evaluating the soft skills of an individual sometimes turns out to be more a subjective exercise. How can Graphology help here? With the help of Graphology, one can get to know a lot of personality traits about an individual even without meeting him/her once just by having a look at the handwriting. It would definitely be unfair here to make hiring decisions simply on the basis of candidate’s handwriting but this powerful medium can be used to ask right questions to candidate in the Interview thereby helping to bring out the necessary personality information and making more informed decisions E.g. by means of handwriting one can easily know about the Thinking Patterns of a person. A Software Developer may require Comprehensive Thinking ability for most part of his job whereas a Software Tester involved in manual testing would do well with Cumulative thinking ability. Having this knowledge before-hand, the Interviewer can ask right questions to judge the Thinking patterns in an individual.

Case study 2- Relaying the right feedback:
Feedback sessions or a One-on-One meeting between Employee and Manager is one of the most important conversations that eventually defines the success or failure of Employee-Manager relationship. Of the many traits that Graphology helps one know is an individual’s Sensitiveness to Criticism. The people who are sensitive to criticism do not always take feedback in right way as they become quite defensive during such sessions. Knowing this information in advance through Graphology can help a Manager handle feedback sessions more effectively.
Conveying an employee what he needs to improve upon should obviously be based on the facts but the role of Manager does not end there. It is equally important for the Manager to help the employee improve upon a certain aspect under discussion. Having accurate understanding of employee’s personality traits helps the Manager drive the necessary improvements in an objective and effective manner. This is where Graphology can be of immense help.
Likewise there are innumerable number of situations where knowing the personality traits of a person accurately before-hand can add enormous value. Graphology is indeed a useful tool that helps achieve exactly the same. I am sure by this time you might already have a lot of questions about credibility and working of the science of Graphology. Let me try to address some of these-
How does Graphology work?
Handwriting is instantaneous photograph of your mind. Your nervous system acts as a wire from brain to hand. Your muscles are coordinated in a more or less writing movement. It begins with a thought in your brain, which is transmitted to central nervous system and then to your hand and fingers, the latter of which are only the vehicles that put in writing.
Handwriting is driven by brain and since hands are the natural vehicles to write something, it is called as “Handwriting”.

Does Graphology accurately reveal one’s personality characteristics?
Graphology does not work on intuition or guess work- it is a science. The accuracy of this science in revealing the personality traits depends upon the skill of the practitioner. In my experience, I have found this to be as accurate as 95%. It’s not my claim but the admittance of the people whose handwriting got analyzed.

What kinds of personality traits can be revealed using Graphology?
In general more than hundred individual personality traits can be revealed accurately using Graphology. It becomes much more when one considers precisely the impact one trait has on others.
Handwriting Analysis provides glimpses into subconscious mind, emotional responsiveness, intellect, energy, and traits such as Thinking patterns, Self esteem, ambitions, concentration, attention to details, Ego strength, Diplomacy, Enthusiasm, Fear of success, Fear of failure, Self consciousness and many more.

Is there anything one cannot tell using Handwriting?
Handwriting cannot reveal one age, gender, nationality, religion, whether writer is left-handed or right-handed and Future of an individual.
Graphology has a great potential to become a powerful tool in Managers’ toolbox. It definitely helps in better understanding of people and minimizes, to a large extent, the intuitive approach in dealing with human resources. It’s not something that is too difficult to learn as more than anything else it involves desire, passion and interest.

- Aakash Chopra is a Test Cricketer from India.
- He played around 10 tests for India and in those proved to be an Ideal opening partner for ever Aggressive Virendar Sehwag.
- He has been quite a champion at the Indian domestic Cricket circuit and has scored loads of runs.

Trivia:
In 2009 Chopra released Beyond the Blues: A First-Class Season Like No Other. The book is a diary of Chopra's 2007–08 domestic season. It was published by Harper Collins. It was critically acclaimed and Suresh Menon of Cricinfo, who wrote that it was "the best book written by an Indian Test cricketer."

A Note about Aakash Chopra's Handwriting/Signature Sample:
I got to know about Aakash's book- Out Of The Blue: Rajasthan’s Road To The Ranji which i really wanted to read given the fact that i was following his writing (and Cricket of course!) for quite a while and had become a fan of it. Quite recently, i connected with him over Twitter (@cricketaakash) and to my surprise he has been quite response to follower's comments. I say surprise because not many known people with thousands of followers on Twitter actually care to respond to follower's tweets. So for me, it was a welcome change. I had made up my mind to buy his book from flipkart.com as it offered a better discount. Then, by chance i encountered Aakash's tweet to buy the book from cricbuy.com, where he was offering to send the self-signed book. The Graphologist in me never likes to let go of such an opportunity and immediately pounced on it even though the discount offered was comparatively less. Was quite heartening for me to see handwritten wishes from Aakash in the book (along with his autograph) and this was enough for me to get started with writing this post!

Aakash Chopra's Handwriting/Signature Analysis:
Aakash is ruled by his head and not entirely by his heart. He is a cool, collected person. Some may see him as an unemotional person. He does have emotions like all the humans but not always feels the need to express them. He may appear as being withdrawn into himself and doesn’t mind alone. He is a very level headed person and will remain calm in emergency situations. He is never quite impulsive.

Aakash has a tremendous ability to focus on any project/task that he takes on. When he is focusing on some project then he forgets everything else that's happening around him. He has the ability to eliminate all outside noises, thoughts, interference, and ability to concentrate on one subject. When he concentrates, he becomes oblivious to everything around self. This trait is also best reflected in his performance in 2003-04 tour to Australia. Although he failed to cross the 50- mark in the four Tests against Australia, he showed enough patience to spend valuable time in the middle, see off the new ball and build a solid platform from which the strong middle order could elevate India to greater heights. His unflappable concentration has a lot to do with the fact that he just loves spending lot of time in the middle of the wicket.

Aakash has the trait of perfectionism in his personality. He is a kind of person who takes time putting everything in place and reviews work thoroughly in order to make it precise. This also helps him to be the greater writer that he is i.e. he would likely spend considerable effort to out his writings into a state of perfection before everyone gets to see it. My mornings have always been well-ordered; I like it that way. On days that a gruelling session or a match lay ahead, my morning to-do list would have been all chalked out in my head the night before. Ever since i started playing Cricket- even as a kid, all of eight- my mornings were dedicated to practice, workouts or even simply a jog. So unvarying was my regimen that i tended to forget what day of the week it was. Every morning looked the same, and so did my plan.

Aakash has Cumulative Thinking pattern in his personality. Cumulative Thinkers thinks or creates much like a mason, stacking fact over fact. In this thinking pattern, the conclusion, is usually not complete until the last fact is in place. Such a thinker prefers to learn more through demonstration, by preferring to experience something rather than simply following any written or verbal instruction. This may take longer to learn but something once learned is retained for a long, long time.
